Marine mammals continue to keep Cornwall Medics busy

Shortly after 0730hrs a call came in from Out-of-hours hotline Coordinator Alex Levine of a seal on the beach at Gwithian, Hayle. Coordinator Dave Jarvis attended with Medics Lesley Jarvis, Sue Sayer and Sue and Trevor Waterhouse.

The pup was high up on the beach close to the Red River. It was fully moulted, not too bad a weight, but had numerous open cuts and grazes across most of his body and all four flippers, so after speaking with Animal Care Assistant Amy Hudson at the National Seal Sanctuary it was decided that the pup should be brought in for treatment. With the help of students from Falmouth Marine School that were nearby (and on the waiting list to do a Medic course next Spring) the pup was caged up and taken to Gweek.

Around midday the next callout was reported via the RSPCA, this time a dolphin at Trevaunance Cove, St Agnes. It was said to be in shallow water with two surfers supporting it. Dave attended with fellow Coordinator Tim Bain, Assistant Coordinators Jenny Haley and Bea Hawker, Medics Jeff Loveridge, Simon Bone, and Trevor and Sue Waterhouse.

On arrival the dolphin and surfers were not in the water, and enquiries with the RNLI shop next to the beach revealed that it had been refloated twice, restranding quickly the first time after swimming weakly in the surf, but the second time had made it out past the breakers and off in the general direction of Perranporth. A thorough search was conducted at St Agnes, but no sign of the dolphin was found, so the team relocated to Perranporth to continue searching there, again with no luck.

Chatting to the surfers that had refloated it and showing them the Medic Handbook appeared to indicate that the animal was a common dolphin that was probably in moderate or poor nutritional state. After a few hours of no sightings, all Medics returned home.
