Very malnourished pup rescued at Portreath, Cornwall

Malnourished seal pupWe received the call about this pup towards the end of the morning, sat out on the beach at Portreath, as it was being surrounded by a large group of people. A few members of the public who had found and reported it were now having a difficult time trying to encourage other beach users to give the pup a wide berth and leave it alone, but sadly some people continued to allow their dogs to harass it while others tried to stroke it.

Coordinator Dave Jarvis and Medic Lesley Jarvis were quickly on the scene and found that the pup was also very underweight and dehydrated, so after speaking with staff at the National Seal Sanctuary it was decided that the most appropriate course of action was to bring it in for rehabilitation. A short time later the pup had been caught up in a cage with the assistance of RNLI Lifeguards on exercise and a member of the public and was soon on its way to the Sanctuary for some much needed peace and quiet and rehydration fluids. It was later weighed at 11.5kg and had some minor injuries on the flippers.
