Netted seal rescue, Pendeen, Cornwall

Seal pup with monofilament net around its bodyA call was received by Coordinator Dave Jarvis at about 11am from the National Seal Sanctuary regarding a seal that was on the beach at Polurrian Cove, near Mullion. Dave advised Head Office and collected Coordinator Tim Bain on his way there.

The pup was found on the beach in reasonable condition, with a good temperature and no apparent injuries, so it was decided to let it go again. Immediately upon doing that, Medic Lesley Jarvis called to say that the Sanctuary had now called about another pup, this time at Pendeen, near Land’s End, which had blood around its nose. Head Office was informed of the new situation and Medic Rory Goodall was called out. En route, the Sanctuary called with an update that the Pendeen seal had also got some monofilament fishing net caught around its body.

Dave and Tim met the caller, Hayley, by Pendeen Lighthouse and she showed them where the pup was, down the coast path hauled out at the top of a small slipway and being watched by Hayley’s mother. The sea was very rough with storm force winds and hail and rain. The seal did not react to being approached by Dave and Tim, so it was picked up and put into the seal bag and brought back to a safer area away from the sea. Rory arrived at this point and helped assess the animal and cut away the net that was actually a single strand of monofilament net around its body before moving it up to where the car park was. Its temperature was 35.4°C, weighed 20kg and was tube fed fluids. Head Office was informed and they arranged for the pup to be taken in at RSPCA West Hatch in Somerset and called out Devon Assistant Coordinator Dave McDonald to help with the relay.

Thank you to Hayley and her mother for staying with the seal pup in such poor conditions and to the other Medics for coming out in it as well.
