Dolphin Rescue at Broughty Ferry, Dundee

BDMLR received a call this morning at 09.48 from the Tayside police who advised that two dolphins had stranded in Broughty Ferry Harbour. Both were alive. I called Gareth Norman, an experienced Medic who also runs Shanwell Wildlife Rescue Trust, who was already on scene. Two builders who were on site had seen the mother and calf on the mud and had refloated the calf just before Gareth arrived and were about to refloat the mum when Gareth stopped them and managed to check mum's condition. They had only been stranded for approximately 20 minutes and since Gareth was happy with mum's condition, she was also refloated. Mum and calf were swimming around the harbour a short while before taking off back to sea. It is thought that they were Common Dolphins. Stewart Burns & Thom McNeill arrived after the refloat but will be staying in the area for a short time to keep an eye out if they are spotted again.

Well done Gareth and the Builders for such a quick response.
