Fish hook causes problems for a Common Seal pup, Anstead Farm, Tyne & Wear

Karen Kirk, one of BDMLR's "Out of Hours" Coordinators, had a busy time of it over the last few days having 7 calls for strandings, 2 on Saturday and 5 on Sunday. These were mainly for Common seal pups.

Common seal pupI received a call from a member of the public, Jeff Parpin. He was on the beach between Seahouses and Beadnell, at a location near Anstead Farm. He was beside a pup, and from description was a reasonable weight, but pup was flat, in that it was not moving, when approached. I informed local Area Coordinator Richard Ilderton and a bulk text message sent out to Medics in the area.

Max Ling, responded and was able to attend. Max phoned to say that the pup was in fairly good body condition, but had fish a hook stuck in its muzzle. The decision was taken to uplift the pup to a local Vets Blythman and Partners.

When Max arrived at the Vets they were concerned about pup's breathing, I spoke to a vet nurse there, and then to Vet Eleanor as advice was needed. I put them in touch with one of our Vet Consultants Sean Langton who was able to consult with the Vet.

Blythman Vets phoned back later to say pup was on drip, had been given anti-inflammatory, and antibiotics, and was looking brighter and its progress monitored. Tuesday 18th: Vets advise that the pup is ready to be transfered to a Rehab centre. Colin from SSPCA Middlebank said they could take the pup and a relay has been set up with Paul and Josie Taggart and Allan McLean.

Our thanks go to Jeff Parpin, Medic Max Ling, Coordinator Richard Ilderton, Eleanor and Staff at Blythman and Partners Vets, Sean Langton BDMLR Vet Consultant, Paul and Josie Taggart, Allan McLean and SSPCA Middlebank.
