First Pup Rescue of the Season

In the early afternoon, a call was received by BDMLR medic and Veterinary Surgeon Heike Dorn, that a white coated seal pup had been found on the rocks in the harbour area, close to The Mermaid public house, Hugh Town, St Mary’s, Isles of Scilly. She responded, together with her Veterinary Nurse (and long distance kayaker and star of BBC TV’s An Island Parish) Sara Roberts and medic Dave McBride. The pup was foundand because it was immediately apparent that the animal had not been born in that location and was extremely vulnerable to outside interference, therefore the decision was made to uplift it. On the mainland BDMLR Area Co-ordinator, Dave Jarvis, was made aware of the situation and arrangements were put in place with British International Helicopters to transfer the animal to the heliport in Penzance. The pup arrived there safely at 18.15, where it was met by Area Co-ordinators Dave Jarvis and Tim Bain and medic Lesley Jarvis, together with members of the Animal Care Team from the National Seal Sanctuary, Gweek, who immediately commenced treatment of the animal. Thanks to all of the medics involved, the National Seal Sanctuary and the management and staff of British International Helicopters.
