Seal Pup Rescued from Cave

Seal pupBDMLR Area Co-ordinator Dave Jarvis received a telephone call at about 12.30 from National Trust staff member Peter Curnow, to advise that a young seal pup had been reported to him on the beach at Gwithian. Whilst Peter made his way across the beach to protect the animal, Dave, together with medic Lesley Jarvis dashed to the scene, where medic Steve Oakley soon joined them. The pup was located inside a shallow cave on a public beach. There was a faint haulout trail leading into the cave, which had become obscured by the footprints of humans and dogs. The pup was beginning to moult from its face and front flippers and therefore the visibly assessed weight of 15kg demonstrated that it was underweight for it’s age, as well as having congested breathing. Having consulted with the Animal Care Team at the National Seal Sanctuary at Gweek, it was decided to uplift the pup and transport it there for rehabilitation.

Thanks to Richard who originally located the pup, Peter Curnow and staff at the National Trust, the medics involved and members of the Animal Care Team at the National Seal Sanctuary.
