Hartlepool Common Seal Pup Rescue

Hartlepool Common Seal PupOn Wednesday 20th July, when I told my dad I was taking him to the Wetland Centre, the detour to a soggy beach off Maritime Avenue in Hartlepool was not what he had anticipated.

BDMLR medic Mark Swales was first on the scene after a report came in of a solitary young common seal pup, spotted the previous night by a caring member of the public, Sally Johnston. By the time I arrived, Mark had the week-old pup under wraps in a towel. The pup was severely underweight and had been excreting a mucous through its mouth and nose prior to my arrival. The cavalry arrived in the form of experienced medics David and Wayne Wilson, who along with Mark, lifted the little pup off the beach.

Upon arrival at Scarborough Seal Life Centre it was clear that this pup needed immediate medical attention as not only was he very underweight, he also had a very large abscess on the side of his face and another on his hip.

Many thanks to Sally, Mark, David and Wayne.
