Young Common Dolphin strands near Padstow, Cornwall

Marine Mammal Medics Phillip Metcalfe and Lewis Eastwood with the young dolphinOn Tuesday 25th October, British Divers Marine Life Rescue were called out to a report of a stranded dolphin at Tregirls Beach nr. Padstow. Medics were mobilised but whilst enroute received calls that the animal had been refloated by a member of the public. The animal had swum off and was now trying to strand by the lifeboat station in Rock. By the time the team diverted the dolphin had been refloated for a second time by the public. The Camel Sailing School and Padstow Harbour Commissioner launched their boats and a search for the mammal was launched. Darkness fell and the search had to be called off.

The next morning BDMLR received a call to say that the dolphin had stranded again near Padstow. Medics were mobilised, including two Ecology students from Cornwall College Newquay. Phillip Metcalfe and Lewis Eastwood trained as marine mammal medics earlier this year and this was their first callout. The dolphin was located and assessed to be a young male Common Dolphin. He wasn't maternally dependent but was socially dependent, meaning that as a young animal he needed to be with members of his species to learn behaviour to allow him to survive to adulthood. A thorough veterinary check showed him to have a very high breathing rate and suffering from convulsions. The tough decision was made to allieviate his suffering and so he was euthanased. A full post mortem will be carried out at the Animal health Veterinary Laboratory Agency (AHVLA) in Truro.

Huge thanks to the medics that attended: Chris and Tabby Lowe, Lewis Eastwood, Philip Metcalfe, Dan Jarvis, Darryl Thorpe, Clare and Robin. Thanks also to the Camel School of Sailing, Padstow Harbour Master and Joelle and her family for looking after the dolphin until we arrived.
