Whalefest fun for BDMLR

BDMLR WhaleFest TeamOver the weekend of November 5th/6th, BDMLR attended the first ever whalewatching festival in the UK, appropriately called WhaleFest.  Being held at the Hove Centre near Brighton, the weekend was full of events for families and serious cetologists alike.

BDMLR was there in force, with the Dive Show stand and whale, dolphin and seal models. The charity hosted a well-attended strandings workshop on the Saturday and Stephen gave a talk entitled 'Unnatural Sounds in the Oceans', looking at the effects of man-made sounds on whales, dolphins and porpoises, on the Sunday.

At regular intervals during both days, children were encouragedJon shows children how to rescue a whale to take part in mock whale and dolphin rescues in front of the stand in the Great Hall.  On one of these, around 30 childrend were 'helping' with many more parents and friends looking on.

BDMLR was selling merchandise and ran a raffle for free family tickets on wildlife trips with Horizon Sea Safaris out of Ramsgate.  There was a lot of interest in courses, not just from local people but also from as far afield as Fiji!

For a first event, the show was quite busy with around 2,500 tickets being sold (children under 16yrs had free entry) and it is hoped that in future years the show will grow much bigger.

Whale rescuers at WhaleFest (permission granted)Just about everyone from the whale world in the UK seemed to be there along with celebrities such as Mark Carwardine drawing the crowds.

Many thanks to all those who helped out over the weekend and made it such a success; Alan, Mark, Janice, Carolyn, Claire, Jon, Sam (photos), Elaine, Steve, Charlie, Adrian, Neil, Sharon, Helen, Phil and Steve.
