Formby seal rescue

BDMLR were advised by the coastguard of a large seal on the beach at Formby, Merseyside on Monday 3rd April. Lifeguards observed the animal that day and it returned to the sea around 5pm.

On Tuesday (4th April) morning a member of public informed BDMLR the seal back at Formby. They were concerned as the animal looked unwell and unresponsive. The Formby lifeguards once kept an eye on the seal until a BDMLR medic was available to attend.

BDMLR medic Chris Cureton reached Formby early that afternoon and found the seal slumped and still unresponsive. The local RSPCA officer met Chris on scene with a large cage so he could get the seal to the nearest wildlife centre.

With help from the lifeguard’s beach quad bike and trailer, the seal was contained and taken to Ainsdale beach and then transported to RSPCA Stapeley Grange by medic Graeme Lawton. The seal arrived at Stapeley Grange at around 8pm.
