Whales die on Tassie beach
Saturday 9th

Eight sperm whales died after being stranded on a beach in Tasmania's north coast.

The animals, five adult females between 10 and 12 metres long and three younger animals, were spotted by an aircraft flying between Flinders Island and Launceston about midday today, government spokesman Tony Scott said. He said a party of Parks and Wildlife staff found the whales stranded on three beaches at Croppies Point, east of Bridport. But they were all dead, he said. Aircraft flying to Flinders Island were asked to search nearby waters for any more whales which might be in distress but none were sighted. "Sperm whale strandings are not unheard of in Tasmania but, being a deep-water species, sperm whales are normally found on the west coast, where the continental shelf is closer to the coast," Mr Scott said. "It is quite unusual for them to be found in the shallower waters of Bass Strait," Mr Scott said. He said further checks would be made of beaches in the area in the morning.

Request for Photos - PDV
Saturday 9th

Kieran Copeland, Anglian Co-ordinator, has asked if anyone has any photos of animals suffering from PDV (some alive and some dead shot would be 'lovely' ). If they could forward some good ones to him, please be selective so his computer does not get locked up retrieving messages !

PDV Weekly Reports
Saturday 9th

The weekly reports provided by the Seal Mammal Research Unit are now quite lengthy and contain a number of graphics. As a result, I have decided not to keep sending them out to all on the BDMLR News/Info Service. I have set up a new ( temporary ) newsgroup 'PDV Reports' and if you would like to receive the report, as an attachment, please reply asking me to add you to the list.

Cheers,

Tony.

Falklands Conservation
Saturday 9th

This is a message from your intrepid Directors down in the Falklands Islands. We have been made really welcome by Falklands Conservation who have arranged four Marine Mammal Medic courses for us over the 10 days we are here. What they didn't tell us is that we would also have to do talks for hundreds of school kids from infants to seniors !

We are now convinced that whales and dolphins will be safe here for generations to come ! We hope to visit colonies of sea lions and elephant seals next week along with the penguins.

You will be pleased to know that we ran one course in a wind chill factor of -18 degrees which freezes your hair (and other things) !

All the best
